Cravings: Friend or Foe?

I found this article on www.myyogaonline.com by Rupina Meer. I know for a fact that I can get bogged down by cravings and sometimes eat out of boredom or stress. I wanted to share this article to help everyone figure out why they desire that 10pm bowl of ice cream or bag of chips. This may give you the motivation and self-awareness to put it down and have a glass of water and just go to bed.

We’re quick to vilify cravings and aim to crush those pesky urgings as quickly as they rear their ugly heads with herculean will power. But if you descend into the heart of your cravings, you’ll find that they’re vital messages that are key to unlocking your body’s optimal vitality.

Cravings Are Not the Enemy

Why is it so difficult to tame the beast of our cravings? And why do we want to tame them? Many people view cravings as byproducts of a flawed will power. But in reality they are vital messages that the body sends out in an attempt to start a dialogue with us. Messages that are too important to ignore. We have this sophisticated bio-computer called the human body that never makes mistakes. No matter how involved we are in the day-to-day madness of our lives, our hearts never skip a beat and our lungs diligently expand and contract to pump our life force. Once we realize that, it’s easy to conclude that cravings are the body’s solution to underlying imbalances. It all comes down to building a trusting dialogue with our bodies, instead of labeling cravings as the evil enemy that needs to be vanquished or ignored.

Shh, Listen. Really Listen, To your Cravings

We’re typically hurtling through life at 95 mph. Is it any wonder that we don’t take the time to slow down and actively listen to what our bodies are trying to tell us? The next time you’re overcome with a strange craving, try taking three conscious breaths to get still, and really descend into the heart of your cravings to decode what your body is really asking for.

Primary Causes of Cravings

You’ll find that most cravings fall into one of these categories:

  • Dehydration – your body typically doesn’t send the message that you’re thirsty till you’re on the verge of dehydration. Dehydration often masquerades as hunger, so the next time you’re overcome with a craving, try hydrating yourself with a full glass of spring water and wait 15-30 minutes to see if that takes care of the underlying craving—you’ll find this often does the trick.
  • Lifestyle – often we eat because we are craving entertainment. If you’re bored, try to deal with the issue directly rather than distracting yourself with snacks. We could also be starving in the areas of love, affection or fulfillment. Touch can be so therapeutic, so don’t be afraid to ask for a hug when you need it. Dysfunctional relationships, unfulfilling jobs, lack of a spiritual practice, not having regular physical exercise or too much exercise are all triggers for emotional eating.
    • Yin/Yang Imbalance – green veggies and fruits have an airy, light, expansive quality that makes the body feel light. They also cool the body and may spark cravings for heavier, warming foods, such as red meat or cheese. It’s simply the ancient wisdom of the yin-yang philosophy in play–the dance between two opposite yet complementary forces that the body uses to maintain balance.
    • Conditioned Responses – your body wants what it is used to.  If you recently indulged in a deep dish pizza, your body will likely crave the ooey gooey cheesiness the next day. You’ll also often experience cravings from foods routinely consumed in your childhood or by your ancestors. The trick is to reach out for a less extreme or healthier version of that food (think dark chocolate versus M&Ms).
    • Seasonal – cravings for rich eggnog or sweets can often be associated with the holiday season while the summer time often gives rise to cravings for cooling watermelons and ice cream.
    • Hormonal fluctuations – menstruation, pregnancy or menopause often cause fluctuating levels of testosterone, progesterone and estrogen levels that may cause unusual cravings.
    • Self-sabotage – often when things are going really well, we experience a self-sabotage syndrome. We all like to fit in and sometimes cave in to peer pressure to go out and get intoxicated or to indulge in nutritionally devoid foods (think buffalo wings) that we normally avoid.

In our 24/7 hard-hitting world, the mainstream media is always releasing some “late breaking news” to keep us hooked to the incessant stream of information. But our cravings are also delivering critical pieces of information about our bodies’ state of homeostasis and balance. These innate whispers of wisdom from within are always trying to make us feel better by urging us to eat foods that will melt our physical tension, give us more energy and brighten our moods. We only have to stop resisting and decode the message.

Eat this….. NOT THAT- The Arbonne edition #1 Tasty Treats

I saw on Oprah, a man named David Zincezenko who wrote a book called ” Eat this, Not That” It is basically a guide to the fast food industry and a breakdown of the calories and nutritional values of Big Macs VS Whoppers, as well as other fast food showdowns. Which is better for you, or wait… the lesser evil, because lets face it, neither of them quality as nutritious foods. I have struggled with my weight my entire life ,so I can tell you  it’s not  fun or  a confidence boosting experience feeling slow, weak, and mentally exhausted. Those are all side affects of a poor diet. But I know that life is short, food is delicious and I can’t go through life never eating chocolate again. That would not be a life worth living in my opinion. We can make better choices. Just like the Yoplait Light commercial you have “Swapportunities” everywhere. The Arbonne Fit essentials is a great Swap for many of those mid day or late night cravings your searching your cupboards for.

If you start you start your day off strong, you wont be as tempted to stray from your meal plan.

FC5 Fantastic

Whistler has had some amazing snow these last few days. 21cm of fresh powder has given our mountain an amazing blanket of moisture. So with that taken care of, what are you doing to keep your skin moisturized? Have you been properly cleansing after a hard day of skiing/snowboarding? Do you exfoliate those dead skin cells off your face to reveal the brightest complexion possible? And lastly, do you replenish the moisture in your skin for soft supple skin?

If you do that’s great, but most people are so tired, they skip their nightly routine and hop right into bed. This is a HUGE NO NO!! I know your feeling bogged down, maybe even stressed out from your day, but your Night routine is the most important time to give your skin the treatment it deserves.

When you lay down  and fall asleep, your pores open up, and absorb everything that was on the surface of your skin. The second you awaken, your pores snap shut. If you go to bed, with make-up, oil, and dirt on your face, when you wake up all that is now trapped in your pores. Results of this can be dry, dull skin, blemishes, blackheads and clogged pores.

I have been using the Arbonne FC5 line. Ever since getting these products, I look forward to my nightly 3 step beauty regime, No matter how tired I am, my day is not complete without  using my Purifying cleanser+Toner, Exfoliating New cell scrub, and Moisturizing Night Cream.  After these three steps, I can wake up knowing that, when my pores snapped shut at the sound of my alarm, they are locking in only the pure botanicals and rich moisture of my Arbonne FC5 products.

Some important things to remember:

Be consistent, and always use a fresh clean face cloth.

Bring the Spa Home. 5 simple ways to turn your bathroom into a mini retreat.

Everyone loves going for a spa day. The soft music, the smell of fresh flowers or aroma therapy candles, is like a comforting hug as you walk through the door. Why can’t you have the luxury of this feeling everyday, or at least on your weekends? With a few tricks you can feel like you walked into a spa each time you enter your ensuite.

1)Keep it Neutral soft neutral colours are key. Buy White, cream, light grey or beige towels and accessories. A splash of colour is alright, but you even want your eyes to relax, so the less the better.

2)Roll it up - Display your towels, and face cloths rolled. Stack them by size, large on the bottom. You could even build a pyramid or put them in a decorative basket or plate

3)Smell the Roses- Or any other flower for that matter. A few fresh flowers or small bowl of potpourri adds to the luxurious feel. You can also use an infuser or scented candles in a light fresh scent.

4)Turn down the lights The harsh bright lights are great for washing your face or putting on make up, but when its time to wind down a dimmer light is key. If you rent and can’t change the switch, Use candles to light the room. Be sure to choose candles with a sturdy holder to avoid any fire accidents.

5) Display – Display your favorite products in a decorative bowl or plate that you will be using for your at home spa night.

Now its time to draw a bath, grab your robe and a glass of wine and unwind. Enjoy, you deserve it.

Creekside… The Local spot

I am in my 5th year living in Whistler, So I am just starting to consider myself a TRUE WHISTLER LOCAL. Its not just length of time I have resided here gives me that right, a lot of the reason has drawn from the fact that ever since moving to Tamerisk, The first small condo community to whistler, I  have rarely been to the village. I even attained my employment no further than Creekside. In fact Creekside is MY village. Everything you need is in Creekside, Grocery(Creekside Market), liquor, shopping, and of course the gondola. Another perk to creekside is that there are some the best food around. Le Gros at the end of my road in Tamerisk is Fabulous! (and Im not just saying that because I work there) Its French country at its best. Rim Rock, Samurai, Dusty’s, BP also very good. I can’t forget about my favourite spot for breakfast the Southside Diner, I crave the Havanos Rancheros breakfast burrito at least once a month. (ask for just eggwhites for a bit of a calorie cutback) I have actually expanded my Southside meal times into lunch and dinner. I have discovered the best spinach salad I have ever ordered. Goat cheese, candied pecans, and a blueberry vinegrette. makes it oh so delish! If you love Pizza and dont want the guilt of eating an entire pie to yourself, check out Creekbread. Its not totally fat free, but at least all ingredients are organic and house made, unlike the red goo the call sauce at those chain pizza places.(Try the Mopseys its my favorite) Last but not least, Rolands pub. What a great spot. This is where the locals hang out. Great bar food and BBQ favorites. This is a great spot to watch your favorites sports team or UFC battles on one of the many big screens. As well as a local favorite Music Bingo night has prizes and so much fun. Dont have anyone to go with? No Problem, the staff and patrons there are like family and will happily include you in the festivites, just pull up a bar stool and enjoy!

Why Arbonne?

Finally, after 28 years in this world, wondering what I was meant to do with my life, I have discovered the Arbonne business opportunity.  Arbonne is a purely botanical skin care and health line. A true network marketing business that anyone with passion and drive can be successful doing. I am truly blessed to have found a way to be my own boss, and work where and when I want.

Ever Since I was a little girl, with 3 older sisters, I knew that I was going to be different. I went through the motions for the first 21 years of my life, high school, university, career type job, but never felt like I was satisfied. It took me 7 years, 500o km and countless un fulfilling and extremely stressful jobs to find what I was looking for. But boy am I glad I did. Arbonne is going to bring me the freedom and financial stability I have been looking for.

Not only is the business ideal for the life that I want to live, It is an incredible product. Everything that Arbonne produces in purely botanical, has no animal products, or bi-products, never tested on animals and has had over 30 years of company research and reputation.

When Choosing a business to enter into during a down economy, it is so important to do your research and be completely behind the product. Arbonne as a company gives its consultants amazing rewards and benefits, such as jewelery, all expense paid vacations, and a Mercedes Benz incentive. When I first heard of all of things Arbonne “Claimed” to give their consultants and managers for their success I will admit, I was skeptical. There are a lot of scams and pyramid schemes out there where promises are not kept. But then, one Tuesday evening, I was invited to an Arbonne evening in downtown Vancouver. It was there where I actually seen the tangible items I was told about.  I was picked up at my house in a white Mercedes, My Manager Tina, perfectly polished draped in her double A (Arbonne advantage) Tiffany jewelery whisked me off to the meeting. There, Krista Bernard, another incredibly successful Arbonne business woman, with her glimmering Arbonne necklace, she began her talk about how this business is everything it says it is. A lucrative opportunity to promote some of the best products on the market. She then had testimonials by others in the area speak about how to be a your own success story, and to show others how to join this network marketing movement. I was enthralled by these women. I hung on every word they were saying, and thought ” If they can do this, I can too!!! I  was inspired !! So I am now an Arbonne independent consultant. I will be doing a product launch this month here in whistler, BC. (Dont worry Windsor, I will be there soon to share with you as well.) I cannot wait to earn my first double A necklace with my strong start program.  So friends and family, I look forward to sharing this wonderful line of products with you, and would love to share this business with you as well. Hope to see you all soon.

Today is the Day!

I took my first step this week to going after my dreams. I am so excited to say that I will be starting with an amazing company. Arboone international is an eco-friendly, vegan, beauty and health line. I cannot wait to get all my products and start my new adventure. Not only is Arbonne an amazing product line, It will allow me to finally be the person I want to be. This business opportunity has given me go ahead to be as creative, innovative, and outgoing as I want to be.  My ambition will no longer be my career destroyer, like it had been in the past. It will finally be my motivation. I have always knew that there was something special out there for me, it took 28 years. but boy did I find it. Once I get underway, I will be using and reviewing the progress of each product. Arbonne can change your life. It has over 30 years of history, and I am looking to be another Arbonne success story.

What do I want to do with my life?

Ok, So we all have this question? We are asked when we are in grade school, then again in High School, we then choose and go to college/university. But most of us in Whistler are walking around with post secondary under our belts and not using it. There are doctors and lawyers, engineers no less, in this town, scrubbing toilets, and asking “do you want fries with that?”  I scratch my head all the time wondering what how this little town can have some of the greatest minds in the world working minimum wage jobs? Rationalizing the 30K student loan they are still paying for the next five years. I got off lucky that way I guess, Yes, I went to university, but I was lucky enough to have lived at home with my parents, rent free during that time. I also was lucky enough to have had a great job that allowed me to pay cash each semester for my education. Thus no Student loans. However was it worth it?  Have I got my money’s worth now? Having not used my university in any way shape or form? Living in a town where hospitality is “Life” I guess I fell into being the “Help” at some of the nicest hotels, this world-class resort has to offer.

I have worked everywhere it feels, enjoyed some places and dreaded getting out of bed for others. This last year has been rough career wise. Having gone through 4 jobs from April to September is a new low for me. It took me 4 years to build a guest service resume, fighting my way up to management, only to get slapped in the face. I put in my 10-12 hour days, dealt with lazy staff, missed a ton of amazing powder days, all for nothing. Because like the 4 years I spent in university I don’t think that Hotels are for me. It’s funny how each took 4 years of hard work and no sleep to figure that out.

I have always knew that I have been different, never a sheep willing to fall in line with the others just because that was what I was brainwashed to do. I Always had innovative ideas. Followed my heart even if I knew in my head this may be a huge mistake. I would have rather failed trying then to never try at all. I have always enjoyed being around people. I just want to please people. I love to be the reason why those around me are smiling. But after this last botched job choice that I was let go for, simply for “not fitting in”, and trying to implement change that they were all so scared of. I realized something. That all those years, I marched to my own drummer, why was I trying to be in someone else’s band? An epiphany had come over me. I want to work for myself. I had always dreamed of being my own boss, and running the show, but never had the gull to actually do it. Not to mention the money to back it up. But a New Revolution is upon us. The power of the internet. Free forums, blogs, Facebook, twitter. Online shopping is taking off, and social media is the platform in which a lot of it stands.  I am embarking on building my brand. I am going to choose a product and go with it. I am very excited to start this journey. I know it’s not going to be an easy one, but I truly think that this is it! Now is the time for me step up and become the person, the entrepreneur I always wanted to be. So wish me luck and follow along…. this is going to be interesting.
